Croatia’s Minister of Construction, Branko Bacic, has announced that the Vjesnik skyscraper in Zagreb will have to be demolished after a fire destroyed it a week ago. Mario Uros, from the Croatian Centre for Earthquake Engineering, said this should be done soon, as the ruin is now dangerous.
The building was a symbol of Zagreb – and of the largest publishing house in the Balkans. However, the daily newspaper Vjesnik (The Herald), from which it takes its name, ceased publication in 2012.
The building had been empty for years, so no one was hurt in the fire, which began when several high school pupils got in and set fire to the papers and cardboard boxes they found on the 15th floor.
“Officers from the Zagreb Police Department have completed a criminal investigation into two 18-year-olds on suspicion of committing a serious crime against public safety,” the Zagreb police announced.
