Deadly Kabul Blast Damages Bulgarian Embassy

The massive explosion on Wednesday in the Afghan capital, which killed about 80 people, damaged the Bulgarian embassy, which is now being evacuated, Bulgarian officials said.

Wednesday’s deadly bomb blast in the Afghan capital, Kabul, which killed at least 80 people, caused material damage to the nearby Bulgarian embassy, Sofia said in a statement.

“The local authorities have closed off the region. The circumstances are to be clarified,” the foreign ministry added, explaining that there is no proof that the diplomatic mission was targeted.

Bulgaria’s Defence Minister Krassimir Karakachanov told Nova TV that a plan to evacuate diplomatic staff had been undertaken.

The powerful explosion detonated near the German embassy at Zanbaq Square round 8.30 local time.

“It was a car bomb near the German embassy, but there are several other important compounds and offices near there, too. It is hard to say what the exact target was,” Basir Mujahid, a spokesperson of the Kabul Police, told Reuters.

No organisation has yet claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.

However, at the end of April, Taliban insurgents announced a spring offensive that would focus on foreign forces through a mix of conventional, guerilla and suicide attacks.
