The court ordered the arrest of Pocuca, who is currently believed to be fighting in Ukraine, for skipping the latest hearing on Wednesday in his trial for endangering the safety of Serbian peace group Women in Black.

Because he missed a hearing for a second time, the court told police to detain him and bring him to the next trial session scheduled for November 27.

Pocuca is being prosecuted for making a statement that football hooligans should unite and fight the peace campaign group after it staged a commemoration in Belgrade marking the 15th anniversary of war crimes committed by Serb forces against Kosovo Albanians during the late 1990s conflict.

“Women in Black are only active when there is a need to ‘spit’ on Serbs, pointing out alleged and unproven crimes by the Serbian army, police and volunteers,” he said at the time.

But even though he was facing trial, the judges didn’t take his passport, so he was able to leave the country last month and travel to eastern Ukraine to join up with pro-Russian rebels fighting against the Kiev government.

He wrote on his Facebook page that he went to Ukraine to “fight against evil”.

“I didn’t come as a mercenary, nor for money, but out of conscious beliefs,” he added.

Pocuca was sacked from his job as anti-terrorist police spokeperson after his inflammatory comments in April.
